Donghwan Kim Receives Best Dissertation Award

Kim Receives Awards at Department and College Levels

Geosensing Systems Engineering & Sciences Ph.D. graduate Donghwan Kim won the best dissertation award in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) for Fall 2019. He was also awarded second place in the Cullen College of Engineering. Donghwan's dissertation work developed new techniques of estimating river discharge over sparsely and ungauged rivers using satellite altimetry. The work applied machine learning techniques to provide more accurate estimates of river discharge.

Donghwan was praised by CEE department chair Dr. Roberto Ballarini and his advisor Dr. Hyongki Lee. Dr. Ballarini wrote, "It is important to note that Donghwan's research has global impact and is directly related to improving the human condition." Dr. Lee notes, "It is expected that Donghwan's work would play an important role in algorithm development and validation of [NASA satellite] SWOT's observables, and contribute to the success of the mission."

Donghwan is currently serving as 102nd Engineer Battalion Commander, 1st Corps, Republic of Korea Army. Congratulations!
