Francisco Haces-Garcia Defends Ph.D. Dissertation

Advancing Urban Flood Resilience

Doctoral candidate Francisco Haces-Garcia, from the Geosensing Systems Engineering & Sciences program, has successfully defended his dissertation, "Flood Resilience Across Timescales in Urban Environments."

The work advances flood resilience by addressing critical gaps in flood risk assessment across current and long-term timescales. Recognizing that traditional hydrodynamic modeling struggles with spatiotemporal urban flood analysis, the dissertation develops innovative methods using high-resolution data and deep learning.

Key contributions include improved hazard assessment techniques, a new timescale asymmetry index to quantify conflicts between risks, and a holistic framework for evaluating flood resilience implications. These advancements provide robust tools for better decision-making in urban flood management. This research highlights the power of geospatial innovations in advancing flood science.

Francisco's GSES advisor was Dr. Craig Glennie. He will be working as a stormwater engineer for Freese and Nichols.
